The Space Foundation announced today it will present the 2020 John L. “Jack” Swigert, Jr., Award for Space Exploration to the teams that jointly worked on the first mission to directly study the deep interior of Mars. On April 2, during the closing dinner of the 36th Space Symposium, the award will be presented to the NASA JPL InSight-Mars Cube One joint project flight teams.

The mission provides a comprehensive understanding of how rocky planets formed and evolved, including their tectonic activity. Data from the mission will enhance continued exploration of our solar system.

The Space Foundation’s 36th Space Symposium will be held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 30 – April 2. Every spring, this international space conference is attended by thousands of the world’s top space leaders, representing all sectors of the global space community. About the Award

The John L. “Jack” Swigert, Jr., Award for Space Exploration was created in memory of NASA astronaut Jack Swigert, a Colorado native who served on the Apollo 13 lunar mission. In 1982, Swigert was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, but died of cancer before taking the oath of office. The Space Foundation, founded in 1983 in part to honor Swigert’s memory, created the Swigert Award in 2004 in tribute to his legacy of space exploration.
