HOUSTON -The Johnson Space Center Child Care Center is going green and will commemorate new environmental additions with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 13.
The ribbon-cutting celebrates the newly constructed Multi-Platform Renewable Energy System completed in September 2007 that uses solar arrays, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and a solar water heater. Houston Mayor Bill White and JSC Center Director Mike Coats will speak at the event along with other speakers from the JSC Project Team.
The new energy system will expand NASA’s knowledge of renewable energy resources for future use in lunar surface exploration. NASA hope’s to capture information that will contribute to the development of lunar surface energy systems and perfect technology that can be shared with other’s interested in renewable energy systems.
"JSC’s project demonstrates what can be accomplished when we apply local brainpower to harnessing the renewable energy we are fortunate to have in our region," said White. "NASA has an incredible wealth of applied knowledge in photovoltaics. Houston, which is already buying a significant portion of its power needs from renewables, benefits from that kind of know-how."
JSC will continue with its multi-year effort to refurbish and revitalize the Center’s infrastructure through green technologies.
