GREENBELT, Md. — Do you have elementary school students? If the answer is yes, you are invited to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Md., on Sunday, February 20 from 1-3:00 p.m. EST for a free afternoon of eye-opening, hands-on activities exploring NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Students will discover how SDO explores and studies our closest star, the sun.
Presentations will help students understand how the sun affects earth and how solar storms are formed. Activities include creating solar bead bracelets that interact with ultra violet rays and making models of the sun using every day materials. Students will also make spectroscopes out of cereal boxes and demonstrate resolution with Legos!
There will be an expert on hand to talk about all things solar and sun. As always, the Visitor Center’s Science on a Sphere presentation will provide insight to different aspects of science.
The Sunday Experiment, held the third Sunday of each month from September through May, features activities showcasing the NASA Center’s world-renowned science and engineering research and technological developments. Families leave inspired by the hands-on activities, wowed by the scientists and engineers, and excited about Goddard’s revolutionary research and technology.

In addition to celebrating all things science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the Sunday Experiment celebrates major science missions that are managed by NASA Goddard and set to launch in the near future.
