WHAT: The Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium — a conclave of aerospace professionals — will be held Oct. 21-22 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. This year’s symposium is designed to allow participants direct access to leaders in the field of human spaceflight and exploration.
The symposium, with the theme “Building on the Past to Power the Future,” will feature panel discussions and speakers focusing on the current state and future of human spaceflight. Marshall Center Director David King will deliver opening remarks to the group Oct. 21. A panel discussion about the Ares I rocket — the flagship in NASA’s new Constellation Program fleet — will follow with representatives of NASA’s Ares Projects and industry partners.
NASA Administrator Michael Griffin will be the luncheon speaker Oct. 21. The afternoon session will feature a discussion about the Ares V heavy cargo launch vehicle and future potential science missions, as well as a look at Huntsville’s historical role supporting the U.S. space program.
The American Astronautical Society and the National Space Club of Huntsville are hosting the event in conjunction with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, The Boeing Company, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, ATK Launch Systems, Teledyne Brown Engineering and Lockheed Martin, all of Huntsville.

Marshall Center representatives who will deliver presentations during the Ares I morning session on Oct. 21 include Steve Cook, Ares Projects manager; Danny Davis, Ares Projects upper stage manager; Jim Reuter, Ares Projects vehicle integration manager; and Jim Taylor, Ares Projects flight and integrated test manager.
Huntsville industry representatives who will deliver presentations during the Ares I morning session on Oct. 21 include Dwight Potter, Ares I instrument unit avionics program manager for The Boeing Company; Fred Brasfield, Ares I first stage program manager for ATK Launch Systems; and Walt Janowski , J-2X vice president and program manager for Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne.
