CLEVELAND — NASA’s Glenn Research Center and the Cleveland Clinic will celebrate National Lab Day on Thursday, May 19 to recognize their collaboration with Cleveland area educators to promote topics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with their students.

For the past few months, Glenn and Cleveland Clinic employees have served as STEM advisors to the educators, which enabled them to receive professional development in STEM subjects.

Educators and students from the following schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will participate in the event: George Washington Carver Elementary, Mary B. Martin Elementary and Orchard STEM School; and East Cleveland City Schools: Caledonia Elementary, Heritage Middle School and Shaw High School.

At 10:30 a.m., Glenn and Cleveland Clinic representatives will lead in an opening ceremony that will be held in Glenn’s Administration Building Auditorium. Veteran astronaut Mike Foreman will share how he became an astronaut and then show a video of his space travel experience aboard STS-129. Foreman currently serves as chief of the External Programs Division at Glenn.

At 11:30 a.m., a breakout session will be held, where the students will present to the STEM advisors the results of their recent scientific investigations. Some of the investigations are related to NASA’s lunar plant growth challenge, the human brain, weather, states of matter and materials under pressure. As part of the learning process, the advisors will offer feedback to the students.

At 1 p.m., the day’s activities will conclude with facility tours being offered.

Reporters interested in attending the event must contact Sandra Nagy at 216-433-9079 or sandra.l.nagy@nasa.gov by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 to arrange for security clearance.
