NEWS RELEASES

NASA PRESS CONFERENCE TOMORROW TO DISCUSS NEW IMAGES
SUGGESTING PRESENT-DAY SOURCES OF LIQUID WATER ON MARS

NASA will hold a press conference tomorrow, Thursday, June 22, at
11 a.m. EDT, to discuss the recent discovery of evidence of liquid
water on Mars using NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, with a
paper to be published in the June 30 issue of Science magazine.
Because some press reports over the past two days on the subject
have been incorrect in significant areas, NASA has arranged to
hold the press conference earlier than originally planned so that
the Principal Investigators, Drs. Michael Malin and Ken Edgett,
can discuss their findings in person. Also, Science Magazine will
release the paper at 10 a.m. EDT tomorrow in advance of the press
conference. The briefing will be held at the James E. Webb
Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E St., SW, Washington, DC.

Contact at NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC: Donald Savage
(Phone: 202/358-1727).
Contact at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA: Mary
Hardin (Phone: 818/354-0344).

ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE READY TO SERVE
    NEW MILLENNIUM SPACE PROJECTS

NASA is poised to launch the first of three of the most
advanced communications satellites ever designed, to replenish the
existing on-orbit fleet that has served the space community since
1983. The newest generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellites
(TDRS) will provide vital communication links with the Space
Shuttle, International Space Station, Hubble Space Telescope and
other spacecraft and launch vehicles.

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-H, or TDRS-H, will be
launched June 29 aboard a Lockheed Martin Atlas IIA rocket from
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL, during a 40-minute launch
window, which opens at 8:38 a.m. EDT.

Contact at NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC: Dwayne Brown
(Phone: 202/358-1726).
Contact at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD: Susan
Hendrix (Phone: 301/286-7745).
