Astronaut Leland D. Melvin will be the guest speaker at the annual “Reaching for the Stars” program in Richmond, Va. He will share his experiences as an astronaut and encourage students to achieve their goals.

Melvin graduated from Heritage High School in Lynchburg, Va., in 1982. He received a bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of Richmond in 1986 and a master of science in materials science engineering from the University of Virginia in 1991. Melvin also played briefly with the National Football League. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1986 and participated in the Dallas Cowboys training camp.
Selected by NASA in 1998, he is assigned to the STS-122 mission that will deliver the European Space Agency’s Columbus Laboratory to the International Space Station.
