MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. — News media are invited to share the excitement of NASA’s science and culture festival on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at Chabot Space and Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd., Oakland, Calif. The festivities support NASA’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) efforts to reach out to underrepresented middle school students.
WHAT: “You Just Have to Believe” is the theme of NASA’s science and culture festival, featuring a holographic presentation of NASA astronaut Leland Melvin and hip hop artist MOS Def discussing mathematics and science. In addition, NASA images of Earth and space will be shown using holographic technology. Students are invited to “believe in themselves and take on new challenges” by participating in NASA’s space program. Numerous exhibits and hands-on science and technology activities, including the opportunity to remotely operate a real NASA rover, will be featured. Youth Speaks, the leading nonprofit literary arts organization in the country, will present its poetry and art. Admission is free.

WHO: Hosted by soul and rhythm and blues singer-songwriter Goapele, the festival includes videotaped appearances by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, astronaut Leland Melvin and hip hop rapper MOS Def. Donald James, deputy director (acting) of the New Ventures and Communications Directorate and former Ames Education director at NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to answer news media questions.
