MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. The NASA Ames Fire Department will conduct emergencytraining Oct. 3, 4, and 6, 2012 on the Moffett Federal Airfield. The training will involve the use of a fire fighting trainer aircraft fueled with propane contracted from Kellogg Community College, Battle Creek, Mich.
The aircraft trainer will provide the department¹s first responders with an opportunity to practice their response to a wide variety of realistic aircraft fire fighting scenarios. The trainer is capable of simulating emergencies including flaming liquid spills, engine fires, interior cabin fires, wheel brake fires, and fires in aircraft auxiliary power units.
Fire departments from throughout Santa Clara County have been invited to participate in these training sessions. Participation ensures mutual aid partners are ready to respond to aircraft incidents occurring within their jurisdiction, as well as any incidents at Ames.
Since the aircraft trainer is fueled by propane, very little smoke should be produced during the fires; however, flames from the live fire training may be visible to drivers on U.S. Highway 101. Nearby community residents also should be aware they might hear sirens during the training sessions. Sessions are scheduled to occur between 9 a.m. 5 p.m. PDT Oct. 3 and 6, 2012; and between 3 10 p.m. PDT Oct. 4. 2012.
