CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Media are invited to the official commissioning of Florida Power & Light’s newly constructed 10-megawatt solar power facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on Thursday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m. EDT.

Media are asked to RSVP to FPL’s Jackie Anderson at 561-310-2866.

FPL’s Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center is located on Kennedy property but outside the security gate, so no NASA badging is required. The event will take place in the solar panel field. With the exception of satellite trucks, parking is not available at the plant. Media are asked to park at the Centralized Industry Assistance Office, also called Kennedy’s Pass and Identification Building on State Road 3. Media will be shuttled immediately to the event site. The commissioning will include NASA, FPL and community leaders.

The solar plant was built for FPL, Florida’s largest utility. It will feed FPL’s electric grid, generating energy for more than 1,000 homes and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 227,000 tons.

Video highlights of the commissioning and supporting video B-roll will air on the NASA TV Video File. For NASA TV schedules, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/ntv

Images of the event will be posted Thursday afternoon on the Kennedy Media Gallery: http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov
