Hamilton Sundstrand Supports Final Space Shuttle Mission; Plans Continued Involvement with U.S. Space Program

Hamilton Sundstrand Corporation, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX – News), today supported the final launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, continuing its legacy of contributions to every launch since the shuttle’s maiden mission in 1981. Hamilton Sundstrand’s auxiliary power units, rudder speed brake actuators, body flap actuators, thermal control, life support and power systems have played a key role in space shuttle missions over the years.

Hamilton Sundstrand has contributed to the U.S. Space Program for more than 40 years, including support of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon in 1969 by supplying the portable life support system for the spacesuit. Hamilton Sundstrand’s Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) have been successfully used on 179 spacewalks, including 125 for the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS).

Following the final shuttle mission, Hamilton Sundstrand will continue to perform under key contracts to support the ISS, which is scheduled to be in orbit through 2020. Hamilton Sundstrand will also continue to perform as lead contractor on the EMU space suit through 2018. In addition, Hamilton Sundstrand is supporting systems for the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle that will have launch capability around 2017.
