The perfect profile of Mt. Fuji rises above Tokyo in this
latest image from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM).
Even though its last eruption was almost 300 years ago, Fuji is
still considered an active volcano. More than 30 million people
make their home in the capital city of Tokyo on the plains below.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission system, which flew
onboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in February 2000, gathered
topographic elevation data over approximately 80 percent of
Earth’s land mass during its 10-day flight. The results of the
mission will be the most extensive high-resolution database of
Earth’s topography.
