ALEXANDRIA, Va. – What is Challenger Center? When will we return to the Moon? How will we get there? What exciting news is happening in science, astronomy and NASA? What killed the dinosaurs, a comet or volcanic eruptions? How can you see the space station or the new comet in the night sky?

Classroom students, parents and anyone who loves podcasts will have the chance to listen to important topics in the space, science and NASA education world – stories that support the thousands of students and teachers who are a daily part of the Challenger Center mission. Challenger Center for Space Science Education was founded in 1986 by the families of the astronauts of the space shuttle Challenger 51-L mission. Challenger Learning Center programs at 50 centers across the country continue the crew’s mission of engaging teachers and students in science. Over 8 million students have participated in a simulated space mission at a Challenger Learning Center since 1989.

Challenger Center for Space Science Education’s mission includes building awareness of the importance of exploration and discovery. The workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is slowly diminishing. It is vital that students and teachers alike embrace these subjects and understand the critical impact these fields have on today’s society.

The ability to offer weekly pod casts for individuals and classrooms will help us support national efforts to engage over 400,000 students each year in positive learning experiences. Challenger Center programs raise student’s expectations of success by fostering a long-term interest in science motivating them to pursue a career in these fields. The network of 50 Challenger Learning Centers across the U.S. train more than 25,000 teachers annually to incorporate project-based learning and use the theme of space exploration to engage students in critical thinking, decision-making, communication and teamwork.
