Lead Science Writer, Media Relations Department California Institute of Technology, Caltech Pasadena

If you are an amazing science writer who knows science and technology like the back of your hand and passionately follows breaking science news in all fields, read on. Caltech needs someone who can uncover page-one stories that are quietly developing in labs, can conduct in-person interviews, can write quickly and creatively, and can pitch stories to reporter friends at the best media outlets.

You’ll write press releases about the latest Nobel laureates on our faculty when the awards are announced–and we get a lot of them. You’ll publicize the biggest telescope ever, which is currently being designed by Caltech. You’ll rub elbows with faculty trying to make cancer a thing of the past. You’ll assist documentary crews and reporters on and off campus. When there’s an earthquake, you’ll arrange interviews with our preeminent seismologists (sometimes at 2 a.m. on a Saturday). In other words, you’ll write about and assist media on a wide range of topics.

You need a bachelor’s in journalism, communications, or science, and at least eight years’ experience in journalism. Higher-ed PR experience is really helpful. Being able to write under tight deadlines is essential, as is a well-developed sense of humor. You must be a team player who can accept editing. Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong organizational skills, and ability to multitask are essential. Must be available 24/7 for occasional newsworthy events. There will be times when you need to drive or fly to assignments. You will need a valid driver’s license and must obtain a California Driver’s License upon hire.

Caltech was home to Feynman, Pauling, Gell-Mann, Richter, and a pantheon of distinguished scientists. This is possibly the best higher-ed science-writing job on the planet.
