WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) this morning met with retired Admiral Harold Gehman, Jr., head of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. Photos are available upon request. After the meeting, Boehlert released the following statement:
“My meeting with Admiral Gehman this morning was productive and reassuring. I came away convinced that the board is fully independent and has the resources it needs to conduct this vital investigation – those are two of my highest priorities. Admiral Gehman assured me that they are conducting a broad investigation that goes well beyond the technical questions. It is an investigation that will provide Congress with information needed to make policy decisions in the future, and the Science Committee will be working closely with the Columbia Accident Investigation Board as we conduct our own investigation.
Each day brings new information, and the Board is not jumping to any hasty conclusions or ruling out any options. Admiral Gehman and his team have a monumental job ahead of them, and I’m confident that they are up to the task.”
