Fieldfisher LLP has advised Azercosmos on its agreement with the Malaysian operator “MEASAT SATELLITE SYSTEMS SDN. BHD” (MEASAT) for the Azerspace-1 satellite at 46° East orbital slot. Both parties decided to conclude the partnership to align with their new strategic directions in the space markets.

Under the newly signed agreement with MEASAT, Azercosmos will utilize all of the Azerspace-1 C-Band capacity, to provide satellite services throughout Africa.

Azercosmos will ensure the continued seamless distribution of broadcasting, data, video, and audio services to more than 100 million African households, and the reliable provision of data connectivity in rural areas and emergency situations.

“Azercosmos is proud to continue its delivery of highly reliable satellites services that enable customers to expand their opportunities in Africa,” said Mark Guthrie, Chief Commercial Officer of Azercosmos. “With its excellent knowledge of legal matters in the telecommunications space industry, the Fieldfisher team efficiently reflected Azercosmos’ requirements in the transaction,” commented Ilgar Abdullayev, director of Legal department of Azercosmos.

The Fieldfisher team was led by John Worthy, partner and head of the Fieldfisher Satellite and Space Projects group, who also advised Azercosmos on its initial collaboration with MEASAT in 2010. The team included partners Robin Spender, Hastings Guise, legal director Tom Martin, senior associates Verity Ellis and Anna Crosby and associate Alex Harbin, among others.

John Worthy comments: “We are delighted to have worked closely with the Azercosmos team to secure this strategic expansion of their international reach. Building the foundation for the next stage of this long-established partnership has been enormously exciting, drawing on our many years’ space experience. We look forward to seeing this collaboration flourish over the years to come.”
