NASA and Alliant Techsystems (ATK) plan to conduct a full-scale test of a five-segment solid-rocket motor Sept. 8 at the ATK Aerospace Systems test facility in Promontory, Utah.

The static firing of the heavily instrumented booster, dubbed Development Motor-3, will last approximately two minutes, NASA and ATK announced Aug. 24.

NASA tentatively plans to use a pair of five-segment solid-rocket boosters to help power the main stage of the heavy-lift Space Launch System it has been directed by NASA to build for deep space missions.
