Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) announced today that Steven J. Cortese will join the company as Senior Vice President, Washington Operations, on October 1, 2006. Cortese is a 20-year veteran of Capitol Hill and public policy issues, serving most recently as Vice President of Programs and Budget in the Washington Operations office of Lockheed Martin. Prior to private sector employment, Cortese was the Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee and the Defense Subcommittee. “Steve brings a wealth of public policy experience and a strong customer focus to ATK. He will play a critical role as a liaison to our customer community as well as the executive and legislative branches of government,” said Dan Murphy, Chairman and CEO. “Steve’s strategic vision will help ATK continue to expand our advanced weapon and space systems business.”

Cortese will succeed John E. “Ted” Gordon, who has announced he will retire at the end of this fiscal year. Gordon has served with distinction as head of ATK’s Washington office since 2001.
