NASA Astronaut Steven Hawley will join Congressman Dennis Moore for three Kansas City area presentations on April 13. The presentations at two local schools and the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce are part of Congressman Moore’s Astronaut Day activities to encourage students to study science and math. Hawley’s presentations focus on growing up in Kansas, how he became an astronaut and his spaceflight experiences.

Hawley’s presentation at Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences will start at 9:45 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. Sumner Academy is located at 1610 N. 8th St., Kansas City.

Hawley also will make a presentation for the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon presentation will take place at the DeSoto School District Board Room located at 35200 West 91st St., DeSoto. Hawley’s final presentation, a question-and-answer session, will take place at 2 p.m. at MidAmerican Nazarene University in Hagel Lecture Hall, Cook Center. The university is located at 2020 East College Way, Olathe.

Selected as a NASA astronaut in January 1978, Hawley has logged 770 hours and 27 minutes in five spaceflights. He served as a mission specialist on STS-41D in 1984, STS-61C in 1986, STS-31 in 1990, STS-82 in 1997 and STS-93 in 1999.
