The American Astronautical Society recognizes and joins in the celebration of the fifth anniversary of continuous human presence onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This major milestone was reached on November 2, 2005, as a result of the impressive contributions and collaborative efforts of the ISS Partners. Working together, 16 nations have accomplished ground-breaking technological and scientific achievements while meeting every challenge that has emerged in a spirit of cooperation. We congratulate these pioneering nations on their successes and wish them many more in the future.
As humankind prepares to once again venture beyond low Earth orbit, the ISS is playing a critical role by providing important experience in international collaboration, on-orbit construction, scientific research, day-to-day space operations and long-term continuous human presence in space that will be invaluable for future exploration activities.
