A lot has changed in the space industry during the past 50 years and educators soon will have the opportunity to be inspired by NASA astronauts and military leaders who will share a glimpse of early space achievements. This special Space in the Classroom program, hosted by the Space Foundation and Air Force Space Command, was created to celebrate a half-century of Air Force missile heritage. The educational conference is to take place on Friday, Sept. 17, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
Gen Lance W. Lord, USAF, Commander of Air Force Space Command, and Brig Gen Elaine Knight, USAF, mobilization assistant to the director of Air and Space Operations, will welcome nearly 300 elementary, middle and high school students. Former NASA Astronaut Jeffrey Ashby, and now the space agency’s liaison to Air Force Space Command, will give participants a space exploration briefing.
Conference participants also will study the historical perspective of the Air Force and missiles, humans in space, and satellites, and then tour the Museum and Air Force commemorative exhibits.
Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI), ATK Thiokol, Pratt & Whitney, Raytheon Company and SI International are co-sponsoring the event. For conference details, please call the Space Foundation’s education department at 1-800-691-4000.
