Focus on National Cybersecurity Strategy, Technology Advancement in Era of Constrained Budgets
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will host “Inside Aerospace – A Forum for Policy Leadership” on May 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Capitol Hill. The forum, which will bring together leading representatives of academia, government, and industry to discuss national cybersecurity issues and how best to advance technology in an era of constrained budgets, will meet in room SVC 212-10 of the Senate Visitors Center, located in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, East Capitol and 1st Streets NE, Washington, D.C.
Keynote speakers are Frank B. “Ted” Campbell, vice president and managing director, C3 & Information Operations, Lockheed Martin Corporation, on the development of a seamless national cybersecurity policy, and Heidi Shyu, principal deputy, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, on the challenges of technology advancement in today’s budgetary environment. The event’s two panels are:
* “Developing a Seamless National Strategy for Cybersecurity,” 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., moderated by Dr. William Nolte, research professor, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland. Panelists include: Dr. Wilson Felder, director, William J. Hughes Technical Center, Federal Aviation Administration; Roger Krone, president, Network & Space Systems, The Boeing Company; Richard Raines, director, Center for Cyberspace Research; and Peter Trahon, section chief, Cyber National Security, representative on the National Cybersecurity Task Force, and Director of the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, FBI.
* “Technology Advancement in an Era of Constrained Budgets,” 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., moderated by Graham Warwick, senior editor, technology, Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine. Panelists include: Mark Borkowski, Office of Technology Innovation and Acquisition, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Amanda Simpson, senior technology advisor, Bureau of Industry and Security, U.S. Department of Commerce; Lt. Gen. Mark Shakelford, military deputy, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, U.S. Air Force; and James B. Tapp, vice president for corporate business development, Northrop Grumman Corporation.
AIAA president Mark Lewis, executive chair of the forum, stated: “This year’s AIAA Inside Aerospace forum will be an exciting platform for discussing the critical issues of cyber security and technology acquisition, especially as they relate to aerospace systems. These issues are timely and intertwined. America’s security is increasingly at risk as adversaries seek to exploit our cyberspace vulnerabilities and infrastructure weaknesses, and we must assure that government and industry are doing all they can to develop systems and technology to combat those threats. To most efficiently build the robust systems needed for effective cybersecurity, today’s technology acquisition processes must be streamlined. Current acquisition processes can often stifle innovative ideas for technology development, or delay their implementation. This imperils our nation’s military and economic security.”
