Focus is on “Creating a Sustainable Vision for Space”
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its SPACE 2012 Conference & Exposition September 11-13 at the Pasadena Convention Center, Pasadena, Calif. The conference theme is “Creating a Sustainable Vision for Space.”
Speakers and panelists for AIAA SPACE 2012 include: The Honorable Lori B. Garver, deputy administrator, NASA; John P. Shannon, deputy associate administrator for exploration planning, NASA; Robert D. Cabana, director, NASA Kennedy Space Center; Michael L. Coats, director, NASA Johnson Space Center; Christopher J. AIAA SPACE 2012 will examine the future of America’s space enterprise. Topics to be considered include: the future of U.S. access to space; the future of NASA’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and Space Launch System; new commercial enterprises for delivering cargo and crew to low earth orbit; entrepreneurial space, including space tourism and research opportunities; maximizing our nation’s national security space assets; improving space situational awareness and lowering the costs of deploying assets into the space environment; the future of international partnerships for exploration and research; the importance of adequately funding space endeavors; and maintaining the primacy of our nation’s space industrial base.
On Tuesday, September 11, the conference will feature “The Candidates’ Visions for the American Space Program,” providing an opportunity for representatives of the Obama and Romney campaigns to discuss their views on, and plans for, the future of America’s space program in front of the space community. Directly following that program, a panel discussion featuring the conference’s executive chairs will be held on the subject of “Creating a Sustainable Vision for Space.”

On Wednesday, September 12, the William H. Pickering Lecture will celebrate the “Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL).” Launched on September 10, 2011, GRAIL’s primary science objectives are to determine the structure of the lunar interior, from crust to core, and to advance understanding of the thermal evolution of the Moon. As a secondary objective, GRAIL will extend knowledge gained from the Moon to the other terrestrial planets.
