Arlington, Va. -President Obama announced today that he is directing the National Security Council and the National Economic Council to undertake a comprehensive review of the U.S. export control system.

“This is a very welcome development,” said AIA President and CEO Marion Blakey. “AIA has been a long-standing proponent of a more predictable, efficient and transparent U.S. export control system.

“While license processing times have improved over the last year and a half, there is much more that can and should be done to modernize the system,” Blakey added.

The administration study is intended to address issues that have long been raised by industry and others. In particular, AIA has long sought a review of technologies on the U.S. munitions list and implementation of better licensing caseload management models.

“The economic and security challenges our country faces continue to grow more complex, and we must have a modern export control system that protects U.S. technology while allowing us to cooperate and trade with our close allies and partners,” said Blakey. “We are looking forward to working with the administration on this important initiative.”
