United Space Alliance (USA) said April 15 it expects to lay off up to half its remaining work force in late July or early August after NASA’s final space shuttle mission — now slated for late June — has flown.
USA, a Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture created in 1995 to operate and maintain the U.S. space shuttle fleet, currently employees 5,600 people at its Florida, Texas and Alabama sites. The new round of layoffs is expected to impact 2,600 to 2,800 employees company-wide, including 1,850 to 1,950 workers in Florida, 750 to 800 in Texas and 30 to 40 in Alabama, the Houston-based company said in a press release.
