NASA’s Glenn Research Center will celebrate six decades of aeronautics, space exploration and discovery on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Great Lakes Science Center, home to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, in Cleveland, Ohio. The event is open to the public.
Throughout the day, NASA science, technology, engineering and math exhibits and activities will inform and inspire adults and children alike.
At 12:30 p.m., visitors get the opportunity to meet former NASA astronaut Gregory H. “Box” Johnson (Colonel, USAF, Ret.) who will share his experience as a space shuttle pilot and space station astronaut during a live presentation and question-and-answer session.
Guests will also be able to shake hands, take a selfie with Johnson and get his autograph. Johnson is a graduate of Park Hills High School (now Fairborn High School), Fairborn, Ohio.
Exhibits and activities will take guests through NASA’s past, present and future of space exploration and air travel. Highlights include
augmented and virtual reality applications that let visitors walk on Mars, go inside the International Space Station and explore wind tunnels and concept vehicles;
a wind tunnel demonstration to show how air flows over aircraft structures enabling engineers to improve airplane designs; and
the PufferSphere, a globe-shaped interactive system that displays video, photos and motion graphics.
Visitors also will experience the “Force and Motion” demonstration, which explores how forces affect an object’s motion, and the “Lift Off” Big Science Show, a dramatic display of chemistry and physics.
Eva, the inflatable astronaut, will make an appearance and guests will enjoy a free snapshot at the “Picture Yourself in Space” photo booth.
