WHAT: For the 24th year, students will compete in the National Science Bowl Regional Competition, to be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
The event uses a fast-paced, game-show format. Students on 24 teams will hit a buzzer to score points on questions at the college freshman level. No calculators or notes are allowed. Questions cover topics in Earth and space sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics and math. Each team includes four students, one alternate and a coach. The winning team will compete in the National Science Bowl finals in Washington, which will be held April 28-May 2.
The goal of the National Science Bowl is to encourage students to pursue careers in science and math. The U.S. Department of Energy started the event in 1991.
WHO: Student teams from 24 southern California high schools (full list of schools on next page). Mars Exploration Project Manager John Callas will give some remarks and present the awards.
WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Final matches begin at about 3:30 p.m., with awards handed out starting at about 4 p.m.
WHERE: JPL, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, California 91109. JPL is located off the Berkshire/Oak Grove Drive exit of the 210 (Foothill) Freeway. Visitor parking is to the left (west) of the JPL main guard gate, across the street from the JPL Visitor Center.
