Gutierrez earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the award at the 40th Annual MAES Symposium in San Diego on October 17.

Founded in 1974, the mission of MAES is to “promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists.” It is the foremost Latino organization for the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) leaders in the academic, executive and technical communities.

*MAES, which stands for “Mexican American Engineers and Scientists,” was the name of the organization when founded in 1975. The “MAES” acronym has been retained to honor the heritage of the organization, but the unabbreviated title now embraces the broad spectrum of nationalities of practicing and aspiring Latino engineers and scientists throughout the U.S.
