WHAT: The regional Science Bowl, a “battle of the brains” that pits teams of science- and math-savvy students from 24 Southern California high schools against each other, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. JPL has hosted the Science Bowl for 22 years.
In a fast-paced, game show format like “Jeopardy,” students buzz in to score points on short-answer and multiple-choice questions at the college freshman level. Students may not use calculators or notes for the competition. Questions cover astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and Earth and space sciences.
Four students, one alternate and a coach make up a team. The winning team will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the National Science Bowl April 24 to 28, in Washington, to compete against dozens of other regional winners.
In 1991, the U.S. Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl, which encourages students to pursue careers in science and math. The competition attracts more than 17,000 middle- and high-school students nationwide.
WHO: Student teams from 24 high schools in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara counties (full list of schools on next page). Larry James, JPL’s deputy director, will give a welcome address.
WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Final matches begin at about 3:30 p.m. The awards presentation begins at approximately 4 p.m.
WHERE: JPL’s bon Karman Auditorium. JPL is located off the Berkshire/Oak Grove Drive exit of the 210 (Foothill) Freeway. Visitor parking is to the left (west) of the JPL main guard gate, across the street from the JPL Visitors Center.
Reporters who would like to cover the event at JPL must arrange access by contacting David Israel in the JPL Media Relations Office by 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan 30, at 818-354-4797 or david.israel@jpl.nasa.gov.
