Two mesh antennas built by Harris Corp. were successfully unfurled aboard the U.S. Navy’s first Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) communications satellite in March, the Melbourne, Fla.-based company said.
The satellite, the first in a planned constellation that will provide narrowband services to mobile U.S. forces, was launched in February aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. The MUOS satellite prime contractor is Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Sunnyvale, Calif.
Each MUOS satellite will carry two of the antenna reflectors, one with a 14-meter deployed diameter for multiple-beam operations and a 5.4-meter-diameter unit that works with gear from the legacy UHF Follow-On satellite system, Harris said in an April 7 press release. Harris is building four additional sets of the antennas.
