HAMPTON, Va. – More than 200 area high school juniors and seniors with interests in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will get to meet one-on-one with professionals at NASA’s Langley Research Center during Career Day, Thursday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Held each year during National Engineers Week, Career Day is sponsored by NASA Langley, Newport News Shipbuilding and the Peninsula Engineering Council. The event is designed to broaden and reinforce students’ interests in STEM and increase awareness and appreciation of engineering.
During Career Day, students will meet with scientists, engineers and researchers in round table discussions and work on one of two design challenges, either using paper, straws and miniature marshmallows to create a shock-absorbing system or design a boat out of duct tape.
NASA currently has three major education goals in 2012 and beyond: to strengthen NASA and the nation’s future workforce; to attract and retain students in STEM disciplines; and to engage the public in NASA’s missions.
