Future projects at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility will be the subject of a community meeting at 6:30 p.m., January 19, at the NASA Visitor Center on Va. Route 175.
“We want to keep the community informed with what’s happening at Wallops,” said Bill Wrobel, Wallops director. “We have several very exciting programs at Wallops this year in which the public will be interested. In addition, we also have several opportunities for new projects that we expect to have positive economic benefits for the community,” he said.
During the hour-long meeting NASA officials will discuss planned missions for 2012 including a sounding rocket mission in March that will see five sounding rockets launched at night in five minutes; the first launch of Orbital Sciences Corp. Antares (formerly Taurus II) launch vehicle; and a hurricane research program that will use two Global Hawk uninhabited aerial systems.
In addition to its on-going missions, Wallops also has before it several near-term opportunities for expansion and economic development in the area. These include an expansion of its aircraft fleet, use of Wallops for unmanned aerial systems based research; support of the Navy Field Carrier Landing Practice for turboprop aircraft and the development of the Wallops Research Park.
