What: On Sept. 8, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication ceremony that launched five decades of history-making science, engineering and spaceflight. Key Marshall Center leaders and civil service employees, retirees and contractors from across the center are expected to participate in the event honoring “The Work of Generations.”
To commemorate the historic anniversary, the City of Huntsville, the City of Madison and Madison County, Ala., have declared Sept. 8 “Marshall Space Flight Center Day.” President Dwight Eisenhower visited Huntsville on Sept. 8, 1960, to lead the Marshall Center’s dedication ceremony. He unveiled a bust of the center’s namesake, U.S. Army Gen. George C. Marshall, who received the Nobel Prize in 1953 for overseeing the European Recovery Program — commonly known as the Marshall Plan — which secured $13 billion in post-war food, machinery and other aid for Europe.

Media must report to the Redstone Arsenal Joint Visitor Control Center at Gate 9, Interstate 565 interchange at Rideout Road/Research Park Boulevard. Vehicles are subject to a security search at the gate. News media will need two photo identifications and proof of car insurance. Visitor parking is available in front of Building 4200 on the southwest side.
