About Yuri’s Night: Celebrated in 198 cities in 51 countries, Yuri’s Night is the world’s biggest space party! Yuri’s Night was created in 2001 to excite the younger generation and increase their knowledge of and appreciation for NASA and space exploration. The night celebrates Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s voyage as the first human into space on April 12, 1961. Twenty years later that same day, the United States completed another significant achievement with NASA’s launch of the first space shuttle.
