NASA astronaut Stan G. Love will return home to Eugene, Ore., May 13-15. This trip marks Love’s first hometown visit since he returned from the International Space Station in February. During the visit, he will give a firsthand account of his spaceflight.
On Tuesday, May 13, Love will share his experiences as an astronaut with students and community members at the Science Factory Children’s Museum & Planetarium. The presentation, titled “From Eugene to Space: Astronaut Stan Love’s Incredible Journey,” begins at 7 p.m. The event is open to media.
Love will visit his former elementary and middle schools on Wednesday, May 14. At 8 a.m., he will present students at Crest Drive Elementary School with a banner that he flew into space during his mission. Love is scheduled to speak to students at Kennedy Middle School at 2 p.m.
The 1983 graduate of Churchill High School will visit his alma mater on Thursday, May 15. Students will gather for the school assembly at 10 a.m. Love will show a video presentation of his 13-day mission to the International Space Station. A brief question-and-answer session will follow.
Selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998, Love was a mission specialist on space shuttle Atlantis’ STS-122 mission (Feb. 7-20, 2008). The primary objective of the flight was to carry the European Space Agency’s Columbus Laboratory to the space station and install it. Love performed two spacewalks to help prepare the Columbus Laboratory for installation. Each spacewalk took more than seven hours. The STS-122 crew traveled 5.2 million miles during the mission.
