NASA astronaut Clay Anderson will be honored at the Kansas City Royals baseball game on May 15. Anderson will throw out the first pitch as the team hosts the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. Before the game, Anderson will be available to sign autographs for fans, including an estimated 18,000 students and teachers attending the 10th Annual “School Day at the K.”

Anderson was born in Omaha, Neb., but considers Ashland, Neb., his hometown. He graduated from Ashland-Greenwood High School in Ashland. He received a Bachelor of Science (cum laude) in physics from Hastings College in Nebraska in 1981 and a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University in 1983. That same year, he joined the Johnson Space Center in the Mission Planning and Analysis Division.
Anderson was selected as an astronaut in 1998. In 2007 he flew as a member of the STS-117 shuttle crew to the International Space Station where he spent a five-month tour of duty working as a flight engineer.
Anderson is the first of several space station crew members returning to their home regions in support of NASA’s 2008 Hometown Heroes Campaign. This year NASA is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the orbiting outpost.
