NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has teamed with nonprofit Space Generation Advisory Council to host a special party on April 12, from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Participants in “Yuri’s Night Goddard” must be at least 21 years old and can expect the Goddard Visitor Center to have a club atmosphere with a tech expo twist. The evening will feature live music from the popular local band, The Cassettes, and beats infused by DJ Scientific, NASA aerospace engineer by day and premier hip hop DJ by night. The event will also include a moon bounce, beer and wine, light refreshments, a round of Space Jeopardy and the ultimate disco ball, Goddard’s Science on a Sphere exhibit. NASA scientists and other space celebrities will interact with the crowd, sharing their excitement for space exploration and research.

The evening will also mark NASA’s 50th Anniversary and highlight the remarkable eight Goddard science and technology missions set to launch in 2008. Yuri’s Night is a worldwide celebration of the anniversary of mankind’s first foray into space and the first flight of the space shuttle. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space on April 12, 1961. Exactly 20 years later, NASA launched space shuttle Columbia on mission STS-1.

More than 105 parties have been planned in 35 countries to date. Other NASA centers hosting Yuri’s Night celebrations this year are Ames Research Center, Johnson Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center.

The evening portion of Yuri’s Night Goddard will follow a day of family-friendly, hands-on activities highlighting amazing space observations of our home planet from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
