On Thursday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Goddard employees will present an exciting day of interactive exhibits and presentations within the Presidential Conference Center, West Miller Senate Building at the Maryland State Capitol. House and Senate members as well as visitors will be provided the opportunity to gain a better understanding of Goddard’s impact in the State of Maryland, the Nation and the global community.

Established in 1959 as NASA’s first space flight facility, Goddard employs over 8,000 people and obligates over $1 billion in the state of Maryland. It is home to one of the greatest scientific achievements of our time, the Hubble Space Telescope and is preparing to launch the final servicing mission later this year. Goddard is currently building the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which is recognized as the first mission in NASA’s planned return to the moon. Other Goddard programs include the James Webb Space Telescope and extensive Earth Science research to include extensive climate research from the Chesapeake Bay to Antarctica.

Presentations during the day will include technologies developed at Goddard that are making a difference in the lives of everyday Marylanders. Displays will include a 3-D view of the sun and an Apollo-era Moon rock. Goddard’s own 2006 Nobel laureate and physicist, Dr. John Mather will explain his award winning research into the origins of the Universe.
