CLEVELAND – NASA’s Glenn Research Center will recognize the contributions made by the African-American community during a special Heritage Month Event on Feb. 6 from 9:30 a.m. – noon. This year’s national theme is “Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism.”

Glenn has invited NASA Astronaut Dr. Robert L. Satcher Jr. to be the keynote speaker. Alvin L. Saafir, Vice President of Community Development at KeyBank, will be the special guest speaker. In addition, there will be a special performance of the National Black Anthem by the Wiley Middle School choir as well as performances by Karamu House.

Invited guests to this special event will be students from Shaw High School and Brooklawn Elementary School.

Satcher completed his astronaut candidate training that included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological training, and water and wilderness survival training in February 2006. This initial training qualifies him for various technical assignments within the Astronaut Office and a future flight assignment as a mission specialist. Before coming to NASA he served as an assistant professor at The Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Saafir began his work with the Community Development Lending area of KeyBank in 1994. He has assisted in the structure and implementation of banking products and programs, related to neighborhood-based community and economic development investments. He has originated and underwritten commercial real estate and commercial business loans with an emphasis on public/private partnerships, government participation, historic tax credits and low income housing tax credits.

Media representatives interested in attending this employee event should call ahead to Lori Rachul or the Media Relations Office at 216-433-2901 in order to be cleared through security.
