University of Washington alumnus Stanley Love will make his first journey into orbit aboard space shuttle Atlantis during the upcoming STS-122 mission to the International Space Station. Atlantis is targeted to launch Dec. 6 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
Love is one of seven astronauts who will deliver the European Space Agency’s Columbus laboratory to the station, significantly increasing the research capability in orbit.

Love considers Eugene, Ore., to be his hometown. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in astronomy from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1989 and 1993, respectively. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., in 1987.
Love was selected as a NASA astronaut in June 1998. He has served in various technical and leadership roles in the astronaut office, including the spacecraft communicator in the Mission Control Center in Houston for the first seven space station flights. He also worked in the astronaut office’s exploration branch, helping to develop future space vehicles and missions.
