GREENBELT, Md. – Media are invited to a groundbreaking ceremony of NASA’s new “green building” at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. on Monday, July 16, beginning at 10:45 a.m. NASA’s New Exploration Sciences Building is the first new building in NASA Goddard’s master plan and will house offices for the Directorate and state-of-the-art laboratories. Media should meet at the Goddard Visitor’s Center, located off Greenbelt Road (State Route 193) and ICESat Road at 10:15 a.m. EDT. A shuttle will take reporters to the site of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Speakers will provide remarks and make the first dig with golden shovels. Participants are:

  • Edward Weiler, Director, NASA Goddard
  • Laurie Leshin, Director of Sciences and Exploration, NASA Goddard
  • Steny H. Hoyer, Congressman and Representative of Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District

  Posters of “What’s to Come” and a floor plan will be displayed and a virtual tour DVD of the new building will likely air at the reception following in the Visitor’s Center. At 12:20 p.m. EDT a special showing of NASA’s “Footprints” movie on the Science on a Sphere at the Visitor’s Center will conclude the events.
