LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, El Segundo, Calif. — The U.S. Air Force Space Command’s Space and Missile Systems Center announced Jan. 31, it has awarded a contract to ITT Exelis as a result of a Broad Agency Announcement released in July 2012 for the, “Weather Satellite Follow-on Activities Risk Reduction Technology Project.”
ITT Exelis will deliver an updated sensor design and engineering development unit of the Enhanced Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer. This new design will include additional spectral bands and provide a near-constant ground sample distance. E-AVHRR will deliver a broader suite of environmental data products as well as uniform high-quality cloud imagery. This updated sensor design will also address parts obsolescence issues with the legacy AVHRR design. ITT’s development effort aims to present the government with an affordable, high technology readiness-level sensor adaptable to current and future ground systems capable of being flown on multiple platforms.
Multiple contracts are being awarded under this BAA. ITT Exelis’ effort focuses on the Electro-Optical sensor portion of the BAA. The Air Force plans to award multiple contracts for sensor risk reduction.
