The Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) will officially re-designate to Space Systems Command (SSC), one of three field commands for the U.S. Space Force, on August 13. The activation ceremony will be viewable via Facebook Live on SMC’s Facebook page beginning at 10:00 a.m. PDT.

Maj. Gen. Michael A. Guetlein will receive his third star prior to the re-designation ceremony and assume the role as Commander of SSC, responsible for developing, acquiring, equipping, fielding and sustaining lethal and resilient space capabilities for warfighters. Additionally, SSC will be responsible for developmental testing, launch, on-orbit checkout, sustainment and maintenance of U.S. Space Force space systems as well as oversight of USSF science and technology activities.

SSC will be one of three organizations in echelons below USSF headquarters, reflecting the newest armed force’s guiding principles of being a lean, agile and mission-focused organization.  Overall, SSC will rapidly identify, prototype, and field innovative, space-based solutions to deliver swift and responsive capabilities to meet the demands of the National Defense Strategy.
