NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland invites the public to discuss the upcoming demolition of a section of its Building 35 Complex on the Lewis Field campus during an informational meeting at the Cuyahoga County North Olmsted Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 22.
The program begins at 5:30 p.m. in the small meeting room and is free of charge.
The project will include the demolition of eight research test cells and five support facilities, including the Combustion Research Laboratory.
These buildings reside within Glenn’s Lewis Field Historic District and have a noteworthy history.
Built at the end of World War II in 1945,the Combustion Research Laboratory provided NASA Glenn, then NASA’s Lewis Research Center, with the facilities needed to investigate different combinations of rocket fuels and oxidizers.
Since its construction, the Combustion Research Laboratory has proved to be a robust facility and has easily adapted to other types of testing such as: gelled propellants, high-temperature materials, engine emissions, laser diagnostics of exhaust plumes and more.
In 2000, NASA began reducing allocated funding for the facility’s maintenance prompting the demolition of the older, outdated structures within the complex.
