Orbital ATK (OA), a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, has been awarded a major new contract by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to supply medium-range target rockets to support the testing of the country’s missile defense systems. The company was awarded a development and production contract under the Medium-Range Ballistic Missile Type 3 Configuration 2 (MRBM T3c2) target program, which carries a firm value of $182 million and a total value of up to $400 million if all options are executed.
“Orbital ATK is honored to have been selected by MDA for the competitively awarded MRBM contract to supply a cutting-edge target system that performs to the demanding requirements of our customer,” said Rich Straka, Vice President and General Manager of Orbital ATK’s Launch Vehicles Division. “These advanced medium-range targets will help MDA further validate the United States’ ability to defend deployed forces and allies against missile attack.”
The MRBM T3c2 contract includes an initial $182 million firm order for vehicle development and production over a four-year period, as well as options for follow-on vehicle production and other activities through 2024 that could increase the total value of the contract to $400 million. Orbital ATK primarily designs and produces its target vehicles and missile defense interceptors at the company’s engineering and manufacturing facility in Chandler, Arizona. Orbital ATK has designed and developed more than 200 targets over 30 years.
“This program capitalizes on our core competency of providing innovative rocket designs that use proven technology to fit our customer’s needs,” said Mark Ogren, Vice President of Business Development for Orbital ATK’s Launch Vehicles Division. “We are proud to expand our targets rocket work with MDA on the MRBM T3c2 program.”
In its portfolio of targets, Orbital ATK also produces the Air-Launched Intermediate- Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) target, the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) target and the Patriot Target Vehicle (PTV) in support of MDA programs.
In addition to its target vehicle programs, the company also provides the Orbital ATK Boost Vehicle (OABV) interceptor for MDA as part of the agency’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) industry team led by The Boeing Company (BA).
