NASA astronaut and Air Force Col. James Halsell and Jim Carter, director of center operations at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will visit Shreveport, La., Feb. 21-22 to kick off the NASA Explorer Schools partnership with two local schools. Media are invited to attend.

Halsell and Carter will share the Vision for Space Exploration with students. The visit is part of NASA’s Explorer School Program, a national effort to help schools increase student interest and participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Broadmoor and C.E. Byrd High School, also in Shreveport, combined their efforts to apply for the program last year. They were officially named NASA Explorer Schools in spring 2005.
Halsell, a West Monroe, La., native and veteran of five space shuttle flights, and Carter, a 1967 graduate of C.E. Byrd High School, will discuss how science and space research enhance life on Earth, and the role of today’s students as the future generation of explorers.
