The Aerospace Corporation awarded employee Howard Carver with the corporation’s 2014 Excellence in Diversity Award. Carver was recognized for his leadership and outstanding sustained support in advancing diversity and inclusiveness at Aerospace. Carver was presented with the award during the CEO’s report to staff on Tuesday.

Carver has been at Aerospace for 40 years, working for 13 years at the corporation’s Library and Information Resources Center and 27 years in Security and Safety Directorate, where he is currently the manager of government security. Carver was cited for being a tireless champion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender causes for many years, both inside and outside of Aerospace.

“Howard’s devotion to the promotion of equality has touched many people of many different races, cultures, and gender identities,” said Dr. Wanda Austin, Aerospace president and CEO. “By taking an early leadership role in Aerospace’s LGBT community, Howard has been able to ensure that his co-workers and Aerospace’s future employees, will have a safer, more enlightened, and more comfortable working environment, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Carver has been an active member in various roles on the Aerospace Lambda Alliance board. ALA is Aerospace’s LGBT Employee Caucus that is dedicated to providing a safe and respectful work environment that is inclusive of all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Carver also donates his personal time promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics and career opportunities at Aerospace to young people.

Aerospace’s Excellence in Diversity Award was created in 2004 to honor individuals whose contributions and behavior demonstrate exceptional support of Aerospace’s corporate focus on diversity through teamwork, competitiveness, excellence, productivity, and quality innovation. The award is presented to the person or persons, during the past year, who best demonstrate the corporation’s commitment to the consistent support and celebration of diversity in the workplace.
