On November 9-10, 2011, Explore Mars, Inc. will be presenting the Women and Mars Conference at the Jack Morton Auditorium at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Topics to be discussed at the conference include, “Why are so many women involved in Mars exploration?” and “How can ‘Mars women’ help to advance STEM education for young women and reach non-traditional audiences?” The conference will also feature policy discussions, an astronaut panel, and numerous other topics.

According to Explore Mars President, Artemis Westenberg, “Women could walk on Mars within the next 20 years. In the meantime, it’s time we show the world that right now women are involved with Space and Mars on all levels of work, from entry level engineers to project managers, women are shaping the next world.”

The Women and Mars Conference will feature some of the most prominent women (and men) in the space community and industry including,

– Lori Garver (NASA, Deputy Administrator) – invited
– Rebecca Keiser (NASA, Associate Deputy Administrator for Policy Integration)
– Tiffany Montague (Google, Space Projects)
– Laurie Leshin (NASA, Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate)
– Penelope Boston (Professor of Cave and Karst Science; Director, Cave and Karst Studies)
– Linda Billings (Research Professor, School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University)

“The demographic in space exploration has changed dramatically since the days the Apollo Program,” stated Explore Mars Executive Director, Chris Carberry. “We are excited to have a discussion not only about the important continuing role of women in space exploration, but how this role can help the space exploration message reach new audiences.”
