Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has announced the winners of its annual Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars program, which awards merit-based college scholarships — payable in $2,500 installments over four years — to local high school students intending to pursue careers in engineering.
Graduating seniors Elizabeth Mack and Kai Shin, from Albemarle High School and Western Albemarle High School respectively, each received the merit-based scholarship for excellent academic achievement and community involvement.
“These students have shown exemplary academic and extracurricular achievement,” said Bill Hannon, vice president of Northrop Grumman’s Maritime Systems business unit. “Northrop Grumman is proud to support science, math and engineering education to encourage the development of such bright young men and women.”
Mack’s exemplary high school achievements both in and out of the classroom contributed to her selection. She has an outstanding academic record and is extremely active in extracurricular and community service programs. Standing out the most is her achievement in Destination ImagiNation, Inc., where she was the lead engineering and technical designer for a team that earned first place in several competitions. She will put her engineering traits to use when she attends Virginia Tech this fall.
Shin’s achievements both in and out of the classroom were factors in his selection. While successfully maintaining a rigorous academic course load in which he excelled in all subjects, including math and science, Shin also excelled in soccer, wrestling and judo, where he has been recognized both statewide and nationally. He will pursue a degree in engineering at the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus.
The Engineering Scholars program motivates promising high school seniors interested in math and science to consider the field of engineering. To be eligible, applicants had to be residents of Charlottesville City or Albemarle County and be seniors graduating in the spring of 2011 from a public or accredited private high school in the area. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student in an approved engineering program and meet minimum SAT and grade point average requirements.
