CLEVELAND — Since 1994 the Earth Day Committee at NASA’s Glenn Research Center has organized activities to educate and enhance the awareness of employees and the general public regarding environmental programs, issues and concerns. Glenn invites the media to see and hear about its efforts and contributions to understanding and protecting Earth.

Center activities for employees include:

Tuesday, April 13, between 11 a.m and 1 p.m. Plum Brook Station will host over 20 exhibits by local organizations, agencies and businesses. The focus is on sustainable agriculture and things employees can do at home to be more conservation-minded. There will be information on sustainable living and renewable power; gardening, composting, native plants and more.

Thursday, April 15, between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Several activities will be held at Lewis Field focusing on home recycling, energy and water efficiency, renewable energy and composting. Over 50 exhibits will provide information on how to live sustainably, local nature events, native plant and conservation resources, and pesto from an invasive species! There will be opportunities to test drive hybrid vehicles. Representatives from Glenn sustainability groups will be present also.

The public is invited to stop by the Glenn exhibit at the Earth Day Coalition’s 2010 EARTHFest at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Sunday, April 18 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The theme of Glenn’s exhibit is clean, renewable power, utilizing Glenn’s space and aeronautics technologies for terrestrial sustainable energy solutions. Glenn will feature information about the Renewable Hydrogen Today project, a NASA-led collaborative project to construct a hydrogen fueling station at the Great Lakes Science Center. A demonstration will feature a solar-powered electrolyzer that separates water into its elemental components of hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then piped into a fuel cell that runs a fan.

Reporters interested in attending either the event at Glenn’s Lewis Field in Cleveland or the event at Plum Brook Station in Sandusky should contact Sally Harrington at 216-433-2037 or the media relations office at 216-433-2901 by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 12, to be cleared through security.
